María Teresa Mirabal
Antonia María Teresa Mirabal Reyes, also known as Mate, was born 15 October 1935 in the Dominican Republic. Mate was raised in Ojo De Agua by her parents, Enrique Mirabal Fernandez and Mercedes Reyes Camilo, and had three older sisters. Patria, Minerva, Dede, and Mate were all involved in the furtive activities against Trujillo's regime although they joined at different times. Mate joined the group when she was staying with Minerva and her husband while they were going through a tough time. Mate and Minerva were incarcerated, but never tortured for going against Trujillo and despite being locked up the girls never quit fighting. On 25 November 1960, Patria, Minerva, Mate, and their driver, Rufino De La Cruz, were visiting Mate and Minerva's incarcerated husbands. On the drive home they were stopped by Trujillo's Henchmen, clubbed to death, then stuffed back into their Jeep and ran off a mountain to make it seem like an accident.
