In the Time of the Butterflies is a historical novel told by four different narrators, the Mirabal Sisters. The sisters lived in the Dominican Republic, that at the time was being ruled by a dictator, Trujillo. The sisters were involved in furtive activities against his regime, which later got three of the four sisters assassinated on November 25, 1960. In 1999, the sisters received recognition by the UN General Assembly, who designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
